Lay Counseling FAQs
A. Definition and explanation of Christian Lay Counseling
The “Lay” descriptor in Lay Counseling signifies the ministry of the people - ordinary followers of Christ who are extraordinarily gifted, trained, and experienced in the ways of cultivating biblical wisdom.
Christianity has a long tradition of meeting one to one for the cultivation of wisdom and personal growth. This tradition is rooted in the sweep of Scripture and offered in deeply personal images such as: the Angel of the Lord meeting Hagar alone in the desert (Genesis 16:7-14), Jesus with the woman at the well (John 4:4-42), or Peter’s restoration through a conversation with the Risen Christ on a beach in Galilee (John 21).
Christian Lay Counseling is a one-to-one relationship that combines best practices of counseling with biblical principles. It seeks to address emotional, relational, and spiritual challenges from a Christian perspective.
B. Integration of Christian beliefs and counseling techniques
At Silverdale Counseling Ministry we believe in the transformative power of “life on life” discipleship in the way of Jesus Christ. By integrating biblical truths with best practices in lay counseling, we provide holistic support in cultivating biblical wisdom resulting in increased meaning and purpose in life.
C. Role of lay counselors in providing support and guidance
Our dedicated lay counselors are compassionate individuals with a heart for helping others. They are not licensed professionals but have undergone specialized training to provide empathetic support and wise counsel. Each lay counselor has completed over 52 hours of study and holds a Certificate of Lay Counseling from the American Association of Christian Counselors. Additionally, each Lay Counselor is part of an ongoing cohort of support and are developing in their personal and ministerial lives.

- Psalm 119:105 declares, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
C. Prayer and spiritual support as part of the counseling process
We recognize the power of prayer and offer the opportunity for prayer during counseling sessions. Philippians 4:6 assures us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
D. Warm and empathetic environment
Growing in our discernment begins by having the freedom to share without final judgement. Our lay counselors provide a safe and nonjudgmental space where you can share your concerns openly. Change begins by discovering what needs to change.
- Scripture reminds us in Romans 12:15 to, "Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep."
E. Active listening and non-judgmental approach
Our lay counselors are trained to listen attentively and empathetically, respecting your unique experiences. James 1:19 encourages us to be, "...quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry." Wisdom comes as we listen to understand first, then follow with purposeful action in the ways of righteousness.
F. Referral to professional resources when necessary
While our lay counselors provide valuable support, there are instances where professional help and higher levels of care may be needed. We collaborate with licensed professionals and can refer you to specialized services when necessary. We also place a high value on pursuing current treatment protocols suggested by medical professionals to preserve and to enhance mental health.
